Bardsey Bird & Field Observatory (BBFO) is a Wales-based charity established to maintain the bird observatory and monitor the wildlife through scientific research on Bardsey Island. We aim to further the conservation of the island’s wildlife and contribute towards the vibrant community on the island into the future.
Our role in monitoring the island’s wildlife is undertaken by our dedicated staff made up of a Warden and two Assistant Wardens. It’s their passion that helps us to maintain the quality of the information we currently collect and produce a well-received annual report. The data collected are fed back to Natural Resources Wales (NRW) and RSPB and it helps inform decision-making and planning with regard to the management of the island.
BBFO is almost totally dependent on staying visitors and NRW for the bulk of its income with additional funds coming from membership and sales of merchandise on the island. The Trustees regard this as a very precarious position, especially when further cuts to NRW budgets can be expected in the future, and would like to see a more diverse income stream. We currently have little in the way of reserves and it is a priority that they are built up to enable BBFO to withstand a period of hardship, should we lose NRW funding.
This is, of course, easier said than done and is the reason we are seeking the services of a dedicated fund-raiser to take this on. As BBFO is a charity with very limited funds the only way this can be undertaken is for this person to work on a commission basis at a rate of 10% of any income generated.
We are looking for an enthusiastic person to be proactive in leading in a number of fundraising areas that include:
- Appeals & Raffles
- Grant-giving Trusts
- Legacy & In Memoriam
- Major Donor & Corporate
The responsibilities of the post will include:
- Leading on the delivery of proposed priority fund-raising initiatives; with staff, volunteers and other Trustees as required
- Working with and ensuring all other Trustees are updated and involved with relevant activities
The ideal candidate will be an experienced fundraiser, with a proven track record and desirable skills in these areas:
- An understanding of wildlife conservation and a strong commitment to its principles
- Excellent communicator who is comfortable working with people at all levels and backgrounds
- Proficient user of basic IT packages
This is a fantastic opportunity to help secure the future of this well-established charity. We are looking for someone who can start in early September. The anticipated initial time commitment is 6 to 8 days per month. As we have no offices, the role will be home-based. For more information and to discuss this position please contact the Chair of Trustees here.
